From following to leading

Hi everyone,

I was reading in the book of Mathew, Chapter 4 verses 18 to 22 and an interesting thought touched my heart. Jesus was walking along His path, and He saw Peter, John, James and Andrew working as they did daily in life. He paused to ask them to follow Him.

How often does our spiritual life begin with us joyfully following Jesus, but after sometime we unkowingly change roles. Out of our desire to please Jesus, we grow and learn but now we now find ourselves asking Him to follow us. “Please Jesus, bless this, “please Jesus make a way for me to get to and influence this certain country”. What if we stayed childlike, keeping our faith in Him, stayed vulnerable in our relationship with Him, and we were content to go to work, (fishing like Peter and John) and represent Him in character and deed in daily life. What if we prayed to Him and worshiped Him, honoring Him who began our journey and who promised to perfect in us that which concerns Him. What if we made it our greatest desire to be led by His voice, His way of communicating with us, instead of us leading Him. It is never intentional when we change roles, but a subtle shift that occurs over time in our efforts to always please Him. He understands this and He asks that every so often we stop and make sure that He has the reigns of our life.

When I hold my granddaughters hand, her little hand is swallowed up in mine so I can help her, lead her and protect her from harmful footsteps. Her small strength is now contained in my greater strength. This is the same when Jesus says, Take my Hand and together we walk, dream and live. Our small hand cannot even be seen because of the size of the hand of the One who holds it.

When it comes to dreams, hopes, promises from Him, we hear Him say, lets go. No striving just obedience. If He wants us to go to Africa, we hear, “I am going to Africa, will you come with me?” I want to bless you, will you receive it? I want to help you, will you let Me?

He is the author and finisher of our faith. His love holds us and goes before us. On our path with Him, He is in our future before we get there. There maybe times when He holds tight and we don’t understand, we may feel restricted, but trust your Father who always sees you as the apple of His eye, His Heart always to protect and lead.

My hope is that this note will lift any burdens of striving or frustration from your hearts. That we all can stop, take a breath and let Him take the lead.

If you are reading this and you are not a person of faith in Jesus, He wants for you to follow Him into all He has for your life here then eternity with Him in heaven.

Blessings and love always, Adrienne.

  1. Love this blog! As a child we played, “follow the leader.” You never knew what you were in for… with Jesus, we have an assurance that if we truly follow Him we will have the victory. It may be delayed but we can be assured it will be forthcoming as His promises are Yes and Amen. My daily prayer is that His voice will become the loudest one I hear and the one I am most sensitive to hear and obey. He surely does lead us to still waters. I like the mention here that His heart protects as He leads. He sees what we miss. His eye is on the sparrow and He watches over me.
